As disciples of Jesus we are in this process of becoming more and more like Him. We are chosen, loved, accepted, purchased, forgiven, righteous, indwelt, empowered, and sanctified to live lives of passionate obedience to Him.
We must do this in community with others so that we can grow and be encouraged in this journey. We are also called to KNOW and OBEY the Word of God.
We need practical obedience that comes from studying, memorizing, and meditating on the Scriptures.
We also need to saturate ourselves in the Bible so that we have sound doctrine.
But ultimately, the reason we spend time knowing and obeying the Word is to grow in intimacy and fellowship with Jesus.
Read John 8:31-32
This is a very profound statement by Jesus. He tells us that we are truly His disciples if we abide in His word.
What does it mean to abide? It means to dwell, to live, to saturate ourselves in it, to read it, study it, memorize it, meditate upon it, and to obey it.
As disciples we are to KNOW and OBEY His Word. We need sound theology and practical obedience. We must be living in Jesus’ Word.
And what is the promise? The truth will set us free!
Freedom in what sense?
Read John 8:33-36
Our identity before we were Christians was one of enslavement. We were in bondage to sin—helpless and hopeless without Christ. Then when Christ raised us to new life and gave us this new identity in Him, He has freed us! He has freed us from sin and from death and freed us to live in a dynamic relationship with Him.
True freedom means that we live for Jesus instead of living for ourselves. True freedom comes in knowing and obeying the truth. True freedom comes in saturating ourselves in the Scripture so that we can obey Jesus.
What is the best way you can truly show your love for Jesus?
Read John 14:15 and Read I John 3:4-5
Notice that John says that His commands are not burdensome. We don’t obey Jesus out of begrudging obligation because we have to. No, we obey Jesus because we want to and His grace in our lives gives us the strength to obey.
We can say that we love Jesus all day long but it is not truly love until we’ve expressed it through obedience.
Is your relationship with Jesus growing deeper and deeper through your obedience to Him? Remember the Great Commission—we are called to teach everyone to OBEY all that He has commanded.
True joy, freedom and fellowship with Jesus comes through obedience.
I truly do love you. I know I don’t show it at times and I fall short of your commands more often than I’d like to admit. Thank you for your grace. Thank you that your righteousness and perfect record was credited to me. Thank you that I’m accepted and not guilty before God the Father. I also know that You demand obedience and I want to show you my love by doing what You say. You are Lord and I submit to You today.
In Your Name,
